There are basically two types of insurance agents:

Captive Agents, who are usually limited to offering products through a single insurance company.

Independent Agents, who generally represent more than one insurance company and can offer a variety of products from any of the insurance companies they represent.

Kemper distributes products and services only through Independent Agents.  We do not operate through Captive Agents.  Not all Independent Agents represent Kemper; only Agents associated with insurance agencies that are individually contracted with Kemper may do so.  Independent Agents are not employees of Kemper. 

At Kemper we are firmly committed to the Independent Agency System.  We believe it is an efficient and effective means for distributing our products.  An Independent Agent has greater flexibility and can offer a wide variety of coverage options that can be suited to your specific needs. When you select an Independent Agent, he or she can offer you the best combination of price and coverage from a number of insurance companies.  As your needs change, your agent can also help you determine the appropriate coverage to provide the best protection. As an insurance professional, an Independent Agent will always try to explain the options available to you and to address your insurance questions.

Independent Agents have a strong customer service orientation and are easily accessible in most locations.  They are local and familiar with your city or town, which is important to you from a convenience and knowledge standpoint.  It’s also important to us, as it provides Kemper policyholders someone with whom to develop a close working relationship.

Agency Compensation

We compensate Independent Agencies for the policies they place with Kemper.  This compensation is in the form of commissions for each policy.  We also may provide additional incentive compensation based upon a variety of factors related to the policies that each Independent Agency places with us.
